The beautiful aqua waters of the Kenai River offer anglers a chance to catch a trophy sized Rainbow Trout, Dolly Varden, Red or Silver Salmon.
Curt Trout has fished the upper Kenai River since 1984 and is very well known for his knowledge of the river, his fishing abilities and innovative techniques. He has passed on this knowledge to our guides who can teach you the new nymphing system you read about in the March 2000 issue of Fly Fisherman, while safely taking you down our beautiful river.
The upper Kenai is designated as a Trophy Rainbow Area, and Alaska Troutfitters promotes catch and release as a way to ensure that we have a resource to enjoy in the future. Fly Fishing is good throughout the season with more traditional nymph and streamer fishing in the spring and summer, and some excellent egg pattern fishing starting mid summer through the end of September.
A full day trip is a must to experience this great fishery and learn the new techniques we have developed. Curt lives to fish and it is evident in his approach to Fly Fishing, so don't be surprised if we hook you on Fly Fishing too!
You can fish with your own gear, or let us set you up with our spin or 7 weight fly rods, all the gear, and chest waders. We use nymphing techniques with floating lines and 9 ft., 10 lb leaders and assorted nymphs and egg patterns.
Don't worry that you've never fly fished before, we have been teaching
fly fishing basics through advanced techniques to anglers since 1993
and and are always looking for a challenge.
We use drift boats to take you to gravel bars where you'll wade the shallows fishing for Trout or Salmon with as little or as much assistance as you want. You'll spend most of the trip on gravel bars fishing your own little stretch of water with as much or as little assistance as you want. Watch moose foraging on the branches as eagles soar over head.
Troutfitters is located at mile 48.2 of the Sterling Highway in Cooper
Landing - a beautiful two hour drive from Anchorage. As you exit the
airport follow signs for Seward Highway South. Enjoy the next two hours
as you drive down the Turnagain Arm and into the Chugach Mountains.
The Turnagain Arm has the second highest tides in the world with a 44
foot difference from high to low tides and 6 foot bore tides.
At the junction of Hwy. 1 and Hwy. 9 follow the directions to Homer
and the town of Kenai for about 12 miles to Cooper Landing. After you
cross the Kenai River Bridge look for us on the left side of the road.
